Ethiopia: Hinterlands
As the Ethiopian Empire expanded in the nineteenth century – Ethiopia was a participant in the ‘scramble for Africa’ not simply a victim of colonialism – numerous tribal areas in the West and the South were incorporated in its borders. These hinterlands remain ethnically diverse and indigenous beliefs remain relatively strong compared to the organised Abrahamic religions found elsewhere in the country.
