Ethiopia: Highlands

Ethiopia’s highlands are the traditional home of the Amhara and Tigray peoples and is essentially the Ethiopia of history with trading relationships with Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome and Arabia dating back to Old Testament times. The region is mainly Christian – but this is Ethiopian Orthodox, a unique domestic tradition existing since the fourth century, not a more recent colonial import as found elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa.
